The Ocean Cylinder Concept.

The Ocean Cylinder range has introduced a completely new standard of aluminium boat safety, stability and performance. The range now extends from 4.4 through to 12m LOA. Standard models include 4.4m, 5.2m, 5.45m, 5.95m, 6.4m, 7.3m, 8m and 9m - forming the nucleus a growing range of standard production Ocean Cylinders. It's only since the advent of CAD/CAM design technology that, married to sophisticated computer-driven aluminum cutting systems, the cylinder concept has become economically viable.

The Ocean Cylinder uses considerably more aluminium than pressed or plate aluminium craft. This can easily be seen in the structure of the topsides. These consist of two completely 'separate skins' - the outer cylinder skin plus the inner topsides layer or 'skin'.

Apart from being much stronger, the Ocean Cylinder offers remarkable advantages over conventional plate aluminium craft:

Safety:

The safety of an Ocean Cylinder is simply impossible to match in a conventional mono hull craft.

The buoyant cylinders, wrapped around the topsides, combined with the double skin, heavily constructed under floor 'chassis' result in no less than 10-15 (model dependant) airtight compartments making the Ocean Cylinder range extremely stable and safe.

Here we see the Ocean Cylinder 6600 being 'swamp tested' with 7 men to demonstrate the safety of the rigid buoyancy design.

Stability and Comfort:

The lightness of the sheets on many aluminium boats makes for a fairly 'bangy' ride. The Ocean Cylinder's architects overcame this by integrating a long narrow hull with an exceptionally deep vee in to the design - deeper in fact than many high performance fiberglass designs. Where the normal aluminum boat would become highly unstable or 'tippy', the Ocean Cylinder's heavier Construction combined with it's unique peripheral buoyant cylinders, create a degree of stability, which at rest is approaching that of a catamaran.

Herein lies a key feature of the Ocean Cylinder concept. As soon as the Ocean Cylinder ascends onto a plane, the main deep vee hull lifts up into it's normal planning mode, the cylinders themselves completely out of the water and minimizing drag from this wonderful safety and stability feature.

Few, if any, monohulls ride as softly as the Ocean Cylinder. Certainly none of the conventional plate aluminium boats even come close - not just our opinion either, this view is shared by Australia's leading boating journalists.

"In terms of safety you'd have to attack this boat with a chainsaw to make it sink - and even that would be a challenge. This is a very tough, strong workboat with a fully sealed self-draining deck, extraordinary stability and the ability to cope with rough weather like no other monohull I have ever tested"

Peter Webster, Australian Fisherman and Boat Owner Magazine, November 1999

The Ocean Cylinder's massive sub-floor strength and the new levels of safety and stability it has established in Australia, ensures each of the models in the Ocean Cylinder range easily complies with all existing state survey regulations, as well as all recognized international classifications.

Commencing with a basic range, the Ocean Cylinders are in full production in Yamba, NSW in both a 'standard' and 'custom' form.

YWE is well known for it's superb custom boat building of commercial craft (ranging from pilot vessels to fishing to high speed pursuit boats) for Australian and Export markets. They specialise in creating boats to the highest level of design construction and performance.

The Ocean Cylinder is most definitely a unique standard of boat design and performance.
